Palm Weaving and Sunsets!

One of the classes we took was coconut palm frond weaving. We learned that there are over 200 varieties of palm trees and only some of them produce fruit (coconuts). We also learned that the native Hawaiians used the leaves to weave all sorts of things: baskets, plates, mats, bowls, ect. The leaf does not get brittle and break when it dries out making it very effective for the longevity of whatever is made. 

For the class the guy taught them how to weave fish using their hands!

 

 

Each fish was different because of their hand size and the way they ripped their "fins" at the end. 

 

 

This project only used one leaf. The teacher told us he has done projects that require as many as 30 leaves. 

 

 

Each leaf has a "bone" down the spine and you fold over the leaf and pinch it and then run your fingernail down the length on either side to remove the bone. Then at the end they used the bone to be a stick for their pet fish. :) Great job girls!

 

The Shops at Wailea were right above a string of super fancy hotels that had a beach walk that was a little over a mile and half. It went in front of all the hotels and you could walk right down through one of them to get to it. It was just about time for sunset after the class so we headed down there. The sunset did not disappoint!

On the way back I had to grab a picture of this banyan tree-lined drive. We had gone through it before when we were biking and it was super pretty but it was even better at night!

 

 

I couldn't believe how big this bush's leaf was and made Peanut take a picture with it for size reference!
