After our picnic we traveled further up the road to the North Shore. The guidebooks said not to go past the Blowhole because the road becomes treacherous after that. It was a pretty crazy road just getting there. We had to go 15 mph at some points with hairpin curves, and a couple one lane bridges.
But we made it!
We started off on the trek down to the blowhole. It was quite a ways down.
This sign says, Warning: Stay clear of blowhole. You can be sucked in and killed. It is NOT a water park. :P
It was a lot different than the other side of the island, but still very beautiful. It's hard to tell how big it all was. The teenagers are right in the middle of this picture. You can see the yellow dot of Boo's shirt. On the far cliff there are two light colored lines that are actually people.
It made me think of pictures I've seen of Ireland with the rocky green coastline and sheer cliffs in some parts.
This is also called the "Acid War Zone Trail" because the old lava rocks look like they have been eaten away by acid or something. It was so interesting to see.
You can see all the holes in the rock Peaches is leaning on. So many of them looked like this. It also kind of looked like coral.
The teenagers made it down to the blowhole first. We read that the spray can get up to 75 feet high!
Down at the bottom it felt like we were walking on another planet.
The blowhole would go every few seconds with the waves. Sometimes just a little and sometimes a huge spray.

The rock formations were incredibly beautiful and interesting.
And it was also interesting to see how different the North Shore was from where we stayed in Kihei. The waves were way bigger so I can see why they surf here instead.
I just wanted to stare at the coastline. So pretty!
The hike back up was definitely more strenuous, but the kids did well with minimal complaining.
Such a cool place! This was definitely a highlight of the trip!
