This year's play was actually the prequel to last year's! So we got to discover how the bookshop became enchanted in the first place. We also met a few new characters. This year Boo got to play cranky, old Mrs. Grimble, a Russian landlady to the bookstore owner. She was HILARIOUS! Everybody loved her and she did an amazing job!!!
She had some of the funniest lines too.
We had to put this white hair paste in her hair and I used makeup to make wrinkles.
Peanut reprised her role as Dorothy and Peaches got to join the cast this year as Toto the dog! She was SOOO excited because drama club is for 3rd and up, but the girl that played Toto last year moved away so they asked her to step in. She was thrilled to accept! And she did an amazing job!!
I couldn't believe how focused and mature she was about the whole thing. It was the first time I have ever seen that kind of concentration from her...there was no distracting her from her role, even during drama club when other kids were playing or messing around, she was totally focused on rehearsal and careful not to miss any of her cues. I'm hoping some of that can translate over to her schoolwork, haha.
We learned that Ms. Margie's bookshop was about to get closed down because of poor sales so the book fairy assigned to her shop decided to bend the rules and bring to life a book character with lots of money. Instead she accidentally brought to life a whole bunch of other characters including the two mice, Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca, who chewed on a bunch of books.
Mrs. Grimble popped in every now and then to hassle Margie about the rent.
Boo didn't have a mike because she is one of the few who can project just fine without one. Haha.
One funny thing about her costume was that Mrs. D wanted her to have a big "caboose" to go along with one of her lines. I had to sew little pillows onto a pair of leggings and then every time she got into costume someone had to shove the pillows up while pulling down on her skirt. Because it was so tight she could hardly sit down.
Fagan reprised his role as the bad guy who stole the cash box and a valuable book and the other characters had to get it back.
Peanut had quite a few lines and she didn't miss a beat.
She had to explain to the mice that their chewing on books was causing problems for the characters.
The show ended with the book characters saving the day by recovering a 10,000 first edition of Black Beauty which allowed Mrs. Margie to cover her back rent and stay in business.
These kids did AMAZING! I was seriously so impressed with how talented they are!
Boo didn't break character at all and hobbled out for her bows.
Bravo! Bravo!
What a great experience!! We are so thankful that they got to be a part of it!
They're already looking forward to next year!
