Kittens!

 It seems like once we figure out a cat is pregnant it takes about 3-4 weeks for the babies to come so I figured Nala would have her kittens about mid-April, but on Friday March 28th Nala darted in the house when Boo opened the door to leave for school. She does that occasionally so I wasn't too surprised. She wandered around the house a bit and when Peaches woke up she played with her for a little while. Then Nala disappeared for a few minutes and when Peaches found her again she put her in the (empty) Lego basket like she sometimes does. 

Nala was resting in the basket on the chair next to us while we were doing school when she started letting out a loud meow every couple minutes. Peaches picked her up after one of them and she was very wet. I thought, did she pee in the basket or did her water just break?? So we put a towel down and left her in there. She started panting kind of funny and a little while later started straining and then without much warning, still sitting right next to us, she pushed out a tiny, wiggly, wet kitten! Then she pushed out the placenta and ate it. Yuck! Which led to a impromptu science lesson on birth. Lol. 

The weird part was that she wasn't bothered by us at all! I thought cats were supposed to hide when they give birth and not want humans around but she seemed totally comfortable with us right there and wanted ear scratches between babies.

 

 

Here she is with the first little one! It's amazing how God gave animals all the instincts and equipment needed. She seemed to know exactly what to do. She bit off the little umbilical cords and licked, licked, licked away until the kittens were mewing and moving around. They each started nursing right away.

 

 

Peaches said, "I have to get a picture of what my face looks like!" Haha! It was almost impossible to get her to focus on school...understandably! One of the kittens was born during her class connect so I had to email her teacher later and explain why she was so distracted. :P

 

 

Another baby! 

 

 

It took about three hours, but she had five healthy babies!

 

 

 

The look on her face a few times was priceless..."What. Is. Going. On."

 

But she did beautifully! Good job little mama!

 

 

What a day!
