Homeschool Class

This year we are doing something a little different for homeschool group. Instead of meeting every Friday for a specific class we are letting each family host one meeting a month and plan one field trip a month. 

This was my month to plan the class and I really lucked out! Noni had been wanting to do a lesson for the class and she did EVERYTHING! She went nuts! She had posters and displays and experiments and games! The kids LOVED it! And the rest of the moms were wondering how they are going to live up to it! Haha :)

Her subject was light, and the first thing the kids got to do was go write a source of light on the poster under either Man-Made or Natural/God-made.

Then we sat down and she talked about some of the basic principles of light and some neat verses from the bible like

I John 1:5  God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.  One of the girls wrote “God” on the Natural sources of light. Awesome.

Noni talked about reflection, refraction, visible light, and types of objects: opaque, transparent, translucent.

She did a GREAT job keeping the kids engaged and presenting it in a way that the 4 year olds could understand while not being boring for the junior high and high school age kids.

Then it was time to experiment! They divided up into groups and went around to the SIX different stations she had created.

Our first station was writing with highlighters on black paper and then turning on the black light to see the “secret” messages. So cool!

Then we went to the shadow room. They loved that!

She had a chart to help them make different shapes.

Then we moved onto the refraction station where we got to see light bending. Very neat.

Noni even made this cool poster of the Electromagnetic Spectrum and the kids could guess where to label things: visible light, x-rays, gamma rays, radio waves, infrared, UV, etc. Then they could flip up the bottom to check their answers!

The reflection station was awesome too! They had to try to write their name, by looking in the mirror and not at the paper. It was REALLY hard!

Another station was playing with periscopes which Noni and Papa MADE! So fun!

This was my only contribution to the day…I bought the supplies. Haha :)

Unfortunately there was no sun, but the kids could still get some indirect light to play with the prisms.

Noni brought everyone back together to review and talk about what they learned. The kids had SO much fun! THANK YOU NONI for making our first homeschool class so amazing!
