Boo had her six month check up with week. They said she looks good but that she hasn't gained enough weight. I have a theory on this. I think they should make a different chart for formula vs. breast fed babies. I know a lot of moms that stop nursing at 6 months, and another set who stop at 12 months. So it stands to reason that at those checkups the exclusively breast fed babies will appear to drop on the charts b/c all their peers have been taking in higher fat formulas. Just a theory, but both my girls have proven it true.

The doctor actually told me I need to "fatten her up". I'm not so sure I do. Exhibit A: double chin, triple thigh rolls, and even little wrist and ankle rolls. I need to fatten this kid up??

She dropped from the 85% to the 50% for weight which means she only gained 10 ounces since our visit in June, but again, I think it is b/c a lot of kids are done nursing by her age. Her measurements were:Height: 27 1/4 inches - 95%
Weight: 15 lbs. 10 oz. - 50%
Head Circumference: 49 cm - 70%

We gave her the controversial shots. I hate that. Every time I go my mind wages war against itself. I go back and forth, back and forth, but it all boils down to the fact that until they offer a better option we are going to keep giving the shots. But we're not happy about it.
And now they have an oral one for rotovirus...did I mention that last time? It's a liquid that they squirt into their mouth and it gives them a "toxic" diaper for two weeks (meaning whoever changes the diaper and fails to disinfect can get the rotovirus). It also gives them some very...loose...stools.

We had a wedding reception/open house to go to on Saturday night and in the car on the way there she finally let loose. We pulled over to the side of the road, but the carnage was too great for a pack of wipes and glove box napkins so we kept going.

We made it to our destination and went into the house. "Hi, congratulations on your marriage! Can we use your bathroom? And your washing machine?" Yes, it was that bad. We had to wash the car seat cover and T had to take a hose to the plastic part b/c of the oozing mess. We probably added at least another 6 months to a year to the happy couples' future plans to have any children.

I had a Dr. tell me to put my breast fed baby on a diet when I was in Venezuela. I actually laughed! What in the world?!

I've never thought S looks too small. It's kinda funny they told you she needs to gain weight b/c you'd think 50% was average?
ReplyDeleteEmery had the rotovirus vaccine too. He had some explosive poo too. I didn't realize you could get it from them though. Good thing I'm good about washing my hands :)
I didn't know the rotovirus made their diapers toxic!! Good to know...now.

You are a good mom. Keith was in 10th percentile and exclusively breast fed and he was fine. I think she is doing pretty darn good for being in the 50th. I agree that they need separate charts. It's the stupid things like that that make me cringe. You are doing a great job!
ReplyDeletePersonally I think those growth charts are based on American babies and children who (these days) are typically overweight. Makes it hard for the rest of us who have perfectly healthy children! It's also really hard for me to find pants and stockings for the children that are the right legnth but don't have a super wide waist! Ethan's a 3T, but wears a size 12 months waist! And he's definitely not underweight.
