Well we have officially been doing school for a week now and we are loving it! Me most of all! So far it is the perfect fit for our family!
I love the idea of homeschooling and with my degree in Elementary Education it seemed like the obvious choice for schooling, but last year I quickly found that having a toddler and a baby in tow didn’t make for easy prep time. It was really hard to find fun and creative things to do while making sure we were hitting all the standards in the common core. With this program I don’t have re-invent the wheel. They already have everything figured out and presented in a fun and engaging way.
The only problem we’ve run into is that the 1st grade work is extremely basic for K. She’s been looking at me kind of funny when I ask her the questions and S pipes right up with the answer. We’ve talked it over with her teacher and we’re basically just going to skim through the material, highlighting anything she doesn’t know or is rusty on and then moving on.
Part of the problem is that the Language Arts is all one unit so while she is enjoying the vocabulary (with fun online games) and writing portion, the reading portion is beginning phonics and sight words. For a kid who has been sounding out sight words since before her third birthday you can imagine that this is a little boring (I hate that word!).
The Phonics program is PERFECT for Boo however so she’s been going through Bug’s online Phonics lessons while Bug sits here. Boo has actually been doing ALL the lessons with us and is doing great! She’s learning a ton. I don’t know what we’ll do when it’s her turn for 1st grade since she’s pretty much doing the whole program as a 3 year old. Oh well, we’ll work it out when we get there!
For now we’re just going to keep moving through the work at an accelerated pace.
Here are some pictures from our first days. Buggy wanted to celebrate her first day of school with pancakes, and of course she wanted to make them herself!
Cute little pink car, and a monster eyeball?? We just saw Monsters U when T was off for the week.
Thankfully I had bought Boo some workbooks from Target so whenever K’s lessons tell her to get out her math book or Language Arts book we just get Boo’s out with those subjects and she’s as happy as a clam.
This is one of the favorite lessons we’ve done so far. They had to cut out and color animal cards and put them on the right continent.
One afternoon Boo was getting kind of grumpy so I asked her to go play on her own for a while. I found her passed out in the breezeway. This learning is hard stuff!
We’ll keep you updated on the progress but so far we LOVE K12!
This weekend we got to go to The Greatest Show on Earth…the circus! I had NEVER been to the circus before! I was beyond impressed! I think T and I had more fun than the girls! In his words we were acting like “giddy little schoolgirls”. :)
We got there an hour early, as our tickets suggested, for the Pre-show. I was so glad we did! We got to sit on the ring and right away one of the juggling girls came over and grabbed the girls hands and took them out to dance.
They were a little perplexed as to what was going on at this point. :)
Then they brought out the youngest member of the circus, 10 month old “little” Sable. She did a few tricks for us.
Then the tightrope walkers came out, and the girls got to walk across!
Next was the jugglers. Talk about impressive! I couldn’t believe some of the stuff they were able to do! K got picked to go stand in a line while they juggled around the kids! T got a cute video, I’ll have to post it tomorrow with Blogger.
Next we got to meet Duchess, a 43 year old elephant! I was impressed with her tricks! She s l o w l y got up on this stool and then spun herself around in a circle! She was so gentle and very well trained!
At the end we all got to go in the ring and dance with a clown. Then it was time to hit the bathrooms and the snack bar before the show started.
The acts were all great! There were camels and horses, dogs, ponies and even a miniature horse that ran through all the other’s legs. So cute!
The jugglers were some of my favorites. They were so good!
The acrobats were pretty cool too! They reminded me of cheerleading. :)
The strong man was pretty cool! We got to see him in the pre-show too. In the real show he did a bunch of impressive stuff with a log, including becoming a human helicopter by spinning two girls around on the end of his log (pictured below, going too fast for a picture).
I think this was the most impressive thing though. Two motorcycles got in this steel ball and were zooming around inside it at crazy speeds. Then, when I was already amazed by that, one of the girls went and stood in the middle and let them whip around her!
The tightrope walkers had a cool routine including this picture…
I didn’t get a picture of the knife guy, but at one point he was throwing flaming knives at a girl who was strapped to a wheel and spinning, pretty quickly, in circles.
At intermission T pointed out that there was an orchestra doing live music! I was wondering how they were always on cue. They were really good and made the whole thing that much better!
The elephants were fun to watch! I had no idea an elephant could sit down! Or do a headstand using it’s nose for balance!
We were totally amazed! The girls loved it, although Boo had a hard time sitting still and spent the second half walking between our seats. The popcorn T bought occupied her for a while. :) K was very excited with all the acts and clapped for everyone. We had a great time!
It might truly be the greatest show on Earth!
